Anforderungen an eine zeitgemäße Candidadiagnostik |
Author(s):
Abstract: Small quantities of candida germs have repeatedly been found on the skin and mucous membranes. Whether or not this results in ill effects is dependent on the predisposition of the host and the genetically determined pathogenic Potential of the yeast. Predisposing factors go hand in hand with a disruption of local or systemic defence mechanisms. By showing pathogenicity or virulence factors, such as adherence, dimorphism, phenotypic switching or the production of lytic enzymes, the yeasts manage to persist on the skin and the mucous membranes for a longer period of time. Apart from an exact differentiation and quantification of pathogens, modern candida diagnostics ought to comprise the identification of pathogenicity factors. This article discusses in detail the relevance of individual diagnostic parameters.
