Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and acupuncture points

Abstract: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is the application of an electrical current through the skin to stimulate the nervous system. Although electricity has been used for pain relief since the Egyptian era, this modality has only really been developed since the 1970s and is currently viewed as a popular non-pharmacological method of pain management. In addition to a choice of four modes of TENS which have different stimulation parameters, the clinician is also faced with a range of electrode placement sites. This review outlines common electrode placement sites and in particular focuses on studies which have applied TENS over acupuncture points for a range of conditions.
