Abstract: Autovaccines are vaccines from dead, autogeneous strains of Escherichia coli. Administered parenterally or by mouth, they cause a modulation of the cellular and humoral immune systems. Autovaccines are solely produced from non-pathogenic strains. By using DNA amplification techniques and genetic probes, all isolated strains of bacteria are routinely checked for major virulence factors, fimbria, adhesins and enterotoxins. Immunological test procedures and hemolysin tests help rule out a phenotypical origin of the virulence factors.Apart from the reliability aspect, modern methods of flow cytometry are used to set up models that help prove effectiveness and improve quality. The fact that in-vitro and in-vivo findings can be applied to other scenarios seems to confirm the high reliability and effectiveness of these individual therapeutic agents. Hence, important aspects of the data gathered in vitro have been taken up by the recommendations on microbiological therapy, thus promoting its development.
