Abstract: A cross-sectional survey of Indiana preschool children aged three to six years was undertaken, comparing their ranking of health as a value relative to selected nonhealth-related values. Using a pictorial, paired comparison adaptation of Rokeach's Value Survey, subjects ranked three representations of health, along with nonhealth values of sharing, family, friendliness, property, and rules. In addition to simple value rankings, chi-square tests of association were computed to determine the degree of association between health value and several demographic variables. Although subjects ranked health high, it was perceived as less important than rules. Significant group differences in ranking health were observed for variables of subject race, paternal SES, and educational/care setting.
