On Improvisation Assessment Profiles (IAP) Part I

Journal/Book: Nordisk Tidsskrift for Musikkterapi. 1995; 4: 55-66.

Abstract: Kenneth E. Bruscia (1987) developed IAP as a model which enables the music therapist to analyze the music as they hear it. The model presents many concepts for description and interpretation of music improvised by the client. The main concepts for description are the scales (focusing on the elements of the music) and the profiles (focusing on the processes in the music). These concepts are defined in great detail, and IAP seems to be inspired by an objectivistic theory of knowledge. In this article I discuss this, and present arguments for the importance of hermeneutics in description and interpretation of music. The relationship between music and the verbal language is also discussed. In Part II I will discuss clinical and research applications of IAP.
