Childhood sexual abuse: Dilemmas in therapeutic practice. Special Issue: International music therapy |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1995; 13: 24-30.
Abstract: Music therapy may be particularly valuable in work with clients sexually abused as children, as many have no conscious memories of their abuse and literally have "no words" with which to work through their traumatic experiences. Therapeutic issues that are common to all therapists in the context of a multidisciplinary team are addressed. Dilemmas arising in therapy are described, the nature and effects of abuse on children are discussed, and the concepts of splitting, conflict by proxy, transference, and countertransference are examined.
