Musikk og fortrolighet. En problematisering av begrepet kodefortrolighet |
Journal/Book: Nordic Journal of Music Therapy. 1995; 4(1): 25-27.
Abstract: Music, understanding and meaning. About problems with the concept of cultural codes In what sense does the understanding of music imply familiarity with a cultural code? Does such a familiarity give an exhaustive understanding of musical meaning? In other words: What do the concepts of understanding and musical meaning imply? Music is different from texts in one essential respect: It has an immediate appeal which makes it difficult to pin down its semiotic implications. In one respect - evidently - the meaning of a certain type of music is conditioned by the cultural circumstances in which it is conceived and perceived. But the culturally conditioned meaning seems to be "disturbed" by the immediate "transcultural" appeal which thus becomes a challenge to the concept of meaning all together.
