Quality of life assessment in adult asthma: Needs, methods and applications |
Journal/Book: Eur Rev Appl Psychol. 1995; 45: 48 Avenue Victor Hugo, 75783 Paris, France. Editions Centre Psychol Appl. 297-301.
Abstract: This paper reviews asthma quality of life (QOL) assessment in the context of the uses to which those assessments are pur. Four asthma QOL questionnaires were published within the space of two years in response to the need to assess new asthma medicines in clinical trials. Clinical trial research using these questionnaires has shown that QOL gain is more specific and has a smaller effect size than might be expected from a biomedical framework, results welcomed more by the purchasers of health care than the pharmaceutical industry. The need for asthma QOL questionnaires as assessment tools in the clinical management of patients, and evidence that asthma QOL is a biopsychosocial interaction are discussed in terms of the different end users of these questionnaires.
