Music and symbols. Special Issue: International music therapy |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1995; 13: 40-45.
Abstract: Examines how the music listening experience is a process in which images are evoked through the listener's interaction with music and how the symbols are determined, first by the listener's personal background, and second, by the level of attention. It is argued that the music therapist's work in general is ritualistic in that it helps people to get in touch with their individual symbolism and how it affects their life. The objectives of the music therapist should not be to identify explicitly these symbols and try to analyze them, but to simply help the patients to get in touch with the symbols introspectively.
