Commentary on Putting leadership back to work |
Journal/Book: Aone's Leadership Prospectives. 1995; 3: 15.
Abstract: Topic: The new leadership skills needed to survive environmental changes. Purpose: If the work of leaders is to help others in their work, leadership theory should emphasize not only hierarchic control but also horizontal interdependencies among workers, interdependencies that arise continuously from doing the work. The leader must therefore be knowledgeable about the work to be done and the nature of the work flow. Source: Traditional theory, which focuses on one's own group, views leadership as an orderly and stable process. It emphasizes worker control with new leadership metaphors, such as diplomats who renegotiate relationships, jazz musicians who improvise, and 911 operators who change work direction rapidly. Conclusions: Leaders of the future need additional skills so they can negotiate with peers, obtain changing information quickly by scanning the environment and identifying key sources, and facilitate work innovation.
