The role of music in the deepening of the disposition of compassion |
Abstract: Considers the formative influence of music upon the human personality, following the methodology of the Science of Foundational Human Formation (SFHF) as posited by Adrian Van Kaam. An analysis of an original formative event with its underlying dynamics is examined within the context of a music listening process. The use of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and music listening is applied to the specific population of music therapists for whom music has served as a servant source. The Method is posited as a unique musical servant source fostering the spiritual formation of the dispositions of those who utilize this mode of music listening. An overview of each component and a summary of the obstacles and facilitating conditions that emerged throughout the research process concludes the project. An affirmative denial testing of the foundational thesis of the research and practical suggestions for formative music listening are also included. (author)
