Delayed immune reaction to lectin-optimised mistletoe therapy onpatients suffering from tumor.

Abstract: The delayed type of hypersensitivity (DTH) was evaluated with astandardized recall antigen multitest system in tumor patients (n = 30)before and after immunotherapy with a mistletoe extract standardized forthe galactoside-specific lectin (ML-1). The mistletoe extract wassubcutaneously administered twice a week for 3 months at a concentrationof 1 ng ML-1/kg body weight. Healthy volunteers (n = 16) represented thecontrol group as to check the realibility of the method (re-evaluationof the DTH after 3 months). This study demonstrated that: 1. number ofpositive skin reactions 2. mean diameter of indurations (score in mm)greatly increased in tumor patients after immunotherapy. In healthyvolunteers, however, both test parameters were stable on re-evaluationafter 3 months. Thus, the standardized recall antigen multitest systemseems to be adequate to evaluate the cellular immunoreactivity (DTH) intumor patients receiving adjuvant immunotherapy.
