VISCUM ALBUM L.: Individuelle Immunreaktionen und spezifische zytostatische Effekte - Konsequenzen für die konventionelle zytostatische Therapie?

Abstract: As each patients immune system is dysfunctional in its own way,individual immune responses are hard to calculate. Here, we presentselected but representative immune responses towards Viscum album L.(VAL). In most cancer patients treated with these drugs, an increasedamount of activated T cells with interleukin-2 receptor expression wasobserved. However, the number of CD8+ T cells decreased, whereas therelative amount of CD57+CD8+ T suppressor/NK cells were raised. Thecytostatic effects of mistletoes were found to be host tree specific butalso to be sex specific. A general effect of VAL seems to be astabilization of the DNA. The antimutagenic effects of VAL extractsmight be of therapeutical benefit during or after conventionalchemotherapy.
