Candida-Problematik - Was leistet die moderne Serologie?

Abstract: Infections caused by yeasts of the genus candida have shown a steady increase in the past decades. The use of antiobiotics and immunosuppressive treatment may encourage the development of candida infections. Also a weakening of host defense mechanisms in relation to chronic disorders or environmental pollutants has to be considered. Isolation of candida from stool samples is a common method and a positive culture is an important factor in the diagnosis of candida infection. Beside microbiological diagnosis the testing of specific antibodies to candida albicans and furthermore the detection of candida albicans antigen in the blood gains more and more interest. Modem test kits on the base of enzyme immuno assays include the advantage to measure specific antibodies of the classes IgA, IgG and IgM. The interpretation of the results of such ELISA tests will be discussed in this contribution.
