Abstract: Intraperitoneal administration of sodium selenite (SeNa) for 7 days (0. 1 and 0.2 µg SeNa per day and mouse, which corresponds to the daily doses recommended in human medicine) induced a thymocyte proliferation and maturation in BALB/c mice. The increase of the number of thymocytes per mg organ weight was most definite after the administration of a higher dose of SeNa. The analysis of the lymphatic subpopulation of the thymus showed an increase of mature T cells with helper/inducer phenotype (L3T4+) and immature T cells, which expressed both surface markers (L3T4+/Lyt-2+). The administration of SeNa (0.2 µg per mouse and day, for a defined period) obviously had a stimulating effect on the thymocyte proliferation and maturation. This thymus activating effect of SeNa is shown in the peripheral blood in an increased number and activity of leukocytes and lymphocytes, which is significant from a statistical point of view.
