Blood fluidity score during vegetarian and hypocaloric diets - a pilot study

Author(s): FRANZ, A.

Abstract: This trial was aimed at testing the hypothesis that a vegetarian diet can alter the fluidity of blood. A small group of women (n--14) followed two different dietary regimens for 6 weeks. Group A continued a meat eating diet and restricted calorie intake to 800-900 kcal/day. Group B followed the same caloric restriction and consumed no meat, fish or products based on meat or fish. Before, during, and after this experiment, the blood fluidity score, a measure to describe the complex rheological behaviour of blood by one single parameter, was quantified« After 3 weeks of dieting, there was no effect on blood fluidity in either group. An increase k fluidity was noticed in the vegetarian group after 6 weeks; at the same time, a decrease could be demonstrated in the control group. It is concluded that a vegetarian diet can positively influence the rheological behaviour of blood. This could have implications relating to the health promoting effects of vegetarianism.
