Abstract: The transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are diseases in different animals and in man which are known for a long time. The course of the diseases in man and animals is similar. But there are no indications, that the diseases of the animals can be transferred to man. As the most important parameters of transmission are known, the risk for man can be minimized. In addition, there are indications that a healthy way of life makes man less predisposed to these diseases as well as to other neurological diseases.
