Gamma-Iinolenic acid better from evening primrose oil or from borage? |
Abstract: In a critical review the gamma-Iinolenic acid containing oils from the semen of Oenothera biennis (evening primerose), Ribes nigrum (black currant) and Borago officinalis (borage) are compared with respect to their quality. Because of the maximal content of gamma-Iinolenic acid Borage oil has the advantage of a lower intake dose as compared to evening primerose oil. Black currant oil takes a medium position. The objection to borage oil because of its content of carcinogenic pyrrolizidine-alkaloids is without any foundation. The concentration of eruca acid in this oil is clearly below the permissable limit defined for nutritional fats and oils.
