Abstract: Objective of this symposium was to take stock of the scientific knowledge on herbal drugs for the treatment of diseases of the bileduct, to define parameters for the pharmaceutical quality of bile remedies, to present methods for pharmacological studies and clinical trials for the assessment of efficacy. This article reports on the lectures presented at the symposium, such as »pathophysiology and clinic of bileduct diseases«, »methods of pharmacological studies«, »choleretic properties of herbal drugs and significance of the metabolism of plant constituents«, »pharmaceutical aspects of herbal bileduct remedies«, »the influence of plant type, cultivation, harvesting and drying procedures on the alkaloid-content of celandine«, »the stability of curcumin in isolated rat hepatocytes«, »the significance of Achillea millefolium as a bileduct remedy«, »the therapeutical effects of Cynara scolymus extracts«, »results of placebo-controlled trials on the efficacy of bileduct remedies containing either Chelidonium majus or cascara bark", »the correlation between the intake of anthranoid-laxatives and the occurence of colon cancer,<, »the definition of phytoequivalence-, and »possibilities of the prescription of bileduct and liver remedies according to § 17.2b of the Arzneimittelrichtlinien (drug guidelines),<.
