Music and music therapy for frail noninstitutionalized elderly persons |
Journal/Book: Journal of Long Term Home Health Care The PRIDE Institute Journal. 1994; 13: 24-27.
Abstract: Discusses the use of music therapy in improving the physical and mental functioning of elderly frail persons, especially those with dementia. Music is a useful therapeutic tool because most persons experience music frequently in their lives and associate it with key life celebrations. Most persons can listen to music any time of the day and can participate in social activities related to music with little effort. Music can also provide an opportunity to interact with family. Within music therapy, music can encourage reminiscence and enhance memory function, help family interaction and communication, facilitate relaxation, enhance motor function, provide some relief from pain, alleviate depression, and help individuals express feelings in a nondirect manner, such as by the selection of songs.
