An age-based comparison of humor in selected musical compositions |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1994; 31: 206-219.
Abstract: Focused on similarities and differences in the assignment of preference and humor ratings for musical compositions by 65 Ss (aged 20-82 yrs). Perceived humor and preference ratings for 10 short musical excerpts were collected from Ss, all of whom were active in either a music skills class or a church music program. The highest preference ratings by all Ss were "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin, "The 1712 Overture" by P. D. Q. Bach, and "The Tortoise" by Camille Saint-Saens. The highest humor ratings by all Ss were "The Streak" by Ray Stevens, "Pal-Yat-Chee" by Spike Jones, and the "William Tell Overture" by Spike Jones.
