The effect of vibrotactile stimulation, instrumentation, and precomposed melodies on physiological and behavioral responses of profoundly retarded children and adults

Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1994; 31: 186-205.

Abstract: Investigated the effect of vibrotactile stimulation, instrumentation (flute vs bells), and precomposed melodies (pentatonic vs major) on physiological and behavioral responses of 15 profoundly handicapped Ss (aged 6-46 yrs). Ss received 4 music therapy treatments: 2 with vibrotactile stimulation and 2 without. Respirations and pulse rate served as physiological measures, while observations of eye movement, facial expression, vocalizations, and motor movement served as behavioral measures. The major flute melody elicited the most vocalization among Ss. The music used in this study induced an initial stimulatory effect in terms of vocalizations, which decreased over time.
