The EEG while listening to music

Abstract: The paper presents an outline of the applicability of the parameter coherence for EEG phenomena caused by the perception of music. Significant changes of coherence by longer lasting epochs of listening to music with respect to EEG epochs at rest are determined between all possible electrode combinations of the 10/20 system. These data are entered into schematic brain maps where they shape characteastic patterns of coherence changes which distinctly differ from those during other cognitive tasks. The results obtained by experiments with groups of persons justify the application of this method in individuals, whereby hints at certain listenining preferences and the degree of musical preeducation are obtained. These findings are interpreted as reflecting events in a system of differential attention which selects and orders the sensory input before the material is further processed at higher order hierarchical levels.
