Abstract: Presents a model of conjoint group treatment for sex offenders and survivors with an emphasis on gender-related issues. Group goals, procedures, and roles of group leaders are included. Conjoint treatment should be one of several treatment modalities employed, including individual and family therapy as well as art or music therapy. Case examples are presented to further clarify the effect of the group on the participants. Goals should include increased understanding of the abuse, increased empathy for the abused, understanding of the cycle of abuse, identification of cognitive distortions, recognition of grooming behavior, accepting the guilt of the offender, evaluations of misperceptions, and reduction of rigidity in gender role stereotypes. Roles of the group members and leader and group procedure are outlined. Through conjoint groups, offenders learn to identify and confront distortions in language and incongruities in behavior.
