The effect of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music on mood, emotional expression, cortisol, and immunologic control of latent Epstein-Barr virus in healthy adults |
Abstract: Investigated the effects of six biweekly sessions of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music therapy (GIM) on 28 adults, ages 23 to 45, who have latent Epstein-Barr virus. Subjects' moods, emotional expression, cortisol, and levels of IgG antibody were examined. The subjects were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. Data revealed no group differences concerning the variables of age, sex, health locus of control, education, alcohol use, physical activity, relaxation practice, daily stressors, or sleep. The subjects enrolled in the therapy noted a significant decrease in depression, confusion, fatigue, and total mood disturbance. They also showed a steady decline in cortisol throughout the experiment. There were no significant differences in the virus level. A short series of such sessions may positively affect mood and cortisol in healthy adults. (author)
