Treatment and rehabilitation of the seriously mentally ill in China: Impressions of a society in transition

Abstract: A visit to a large psychiatric Chinese hospital with 1,200 patients revealed determined efforts to modernize and improve services for the seriously mentally ill. In sharp contrast to current practice in the United States, the mentally ill of China retain strong functional and supportive links to their work units and families that offer the potential for reintegration into society. Discussion focuses on (1) the organization and delivery of mental health services in China and (2) psychosocial rehabilitation modalities, including herbal medications, acupuncture, meditation, Morita therapy, music therapy, behavior therapy, and pharmacotherapy.
