Music therapy interventions for people with eating disorders in an inpatient setting. Special Issue: Psychiatric music therapy |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1994; 12: 104-110.
Abstract: Considers the general issues of people with eating disorders and gives some examples of music therapy interventions that can be used in an inpatient setting. The author argues that music therapy can provide support, experiences in which the patient has control, new methods of expression and coping with problems, and connections with other people. Interventions include (1) music reinforced relaxation techniques such as stretching, progressive muscle relaxation, breathing, and directed imagery techniques, (2) structured music therapy group techniques such as music and movement, handbells and choir chimes, group singing, and instrumental improvisation, and (3) insight-oriented music and imagery techniques.
