Abstract: Examined the effect of a music listening, stress-reduction strategy, offered through home visits with a therapist compared to self-administered techniques with moderate and indirect therapist contact. 30 Ss (aged 61-86 yrs) diagnosed with major or minor depressive disorder were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 conditions: a home-based music therapy (MT), self-administered MT, or a wait-list control group. Ss in both music conditions performed significantly better than controls on measures of depression, distress, self-esteem, and mood. The potential for this type of intervention with homebound elders and others who have limited access to services is discussed.
