Functional music leisure skills for individuals with mental retardation |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1994; 12: 15-19.
Abstract: Validated a list of functional music skills for individuals with mental retardation by having music therapists sort skills into 2 levels of difficulty based on definitions provided. 134 registered music therapists completed a questionnaire with items on 66 functional music skills randomly listed under 8 listening categories. Results indicate that Level-1 listening skills (LSs) were primarily related to radio, TV, record-player, compact-disk, and tape-player use with some concert attendance skills, while Level-2 LSs were generally related to borrowing or buying recordings and making concert ticket reservations. Level-1 performance skills (PSs) were primarily related to coordinating body movement to music, singing alone, and making sounds on instruments, while Level-2 PSs were generally related to demonstrating rehearsal skills and stage manners, singing with others, and playing melodies on instruments alone or with others.
