Abstract: Determined the effects of no music, stimulative background music, and sedative background music conditions at peak periods of the day on the agitated behaviors of 28 patients (aged 56-81 yrs) with severe dementias. Data were taken with a placheck method for 30 days: 10 days for each of the 3 conditions, 3 times a day for 30 min. Results showed no significant differences in the percentages of agitated behaviors exhibited during the 3 testing conditions. The music and no-music background conditions did not significantly influence the agitated behaviors, suggesting that 1 type of music selected for all residents of a unit who have dementias will likely be ineffective.
Note: stimulative vs sedative background vs no music; agitated behaviors; 56 81 yr olds with severe dementias
