Abstract: 64 college music students in each of 5 instrumental areas and 1 vocal area were assessed for heart rate, perceived anxiety, performance quality, and behavior during juried and nonjuried conditions. The experiment was a pretest-posttest control group design with matching. Results showed significant increases in heart rate and anxiety scores between conditions. However, there were no significant differences due to open and blind jury conditions. Further analysis showed no association among variables, suggesting that there may be different types of performance anxiety.
