Hypoglycaemia and personality

Abstract: Functional hypoglycaemia remains a controversial subject. This paper attempts a balanced reference review, and discusses and compares some of the many studies published over the last 70 years.The effects of hypoglycaemia on personality and brain chemistry are discussed, with particular reference to the adrenal mechanism. The value of the extended glucose tolerance test in diagnosing hypoglycaemia is assessed and a diagnostic rationale is offered. The link between functional hypoglycaemia and physical and mental symptoms deserves greater discussion and attention.
