Abstract: The influence of drinking waters (500 ml each) with different ionic compositions an the levels of gastrin and somatostatin in the peripheral blood was studied an 11 and 13 healthy young male volunteers, respectively. Compared with deionised water, the addition of CO2 (2050 ±250 mg/I) resulted in a reduced lowering of the gastric level and caused a stronger, but delayed increase of the somatostatin level. This shows the necessity to use waters with nearly the same content Of COZ as standard solutions when studying the gastrointestinal effects evoked by drunken waters. The addition of 4 g/I NaCl and CO2 to the deionised water resulted in a significant lowering of the gastrin level up to 50 minutes after drinking, whereas the level of somatostatin remained nearly constant.Three sodium containing medicinal mineral waters were also examined in this study. All of them changed the levels of the examined hormones in a way that suggested an increase of the secretion of gastrin acid only within the first 10 minutes. However, looking at a longer time interval, a lowering of the secretion of gastric acid may occur. The hormon levels differed in altitude and trend and also chronically.
