Abstract: The influence of UVC radiation on serum, haemoglobin cyanide standard, lysate and erythrocyte suspension was investigated on the basis of the UV/ VIS absorption spectra of these solutons and lysed erythrocytes. With decreasing quartz cuvette flow rate in the UV blood irradiation device, i.e. with increasing radiation dose, absorbance increased continously in the serum dilution and haemoglobin cyanide standard solution and decreased continously in the erythrocyte lysates. On the other hand, irradiaton of erythrocyte suspension at high flow rates resulted in increased absorbance whereas absorbance was reduced at lower rates. The varying behaviour of the suspended erythrocytes at various irradiation dose levels as compared to the lysates is discussed in relation to cell damage on the one hand and the stability of the oxygen bonds in the oxyhaemoglobin on the other hand.
