Quality assurance an physical medicine |
Journal/Book: Physikalische Medizin Rehabilitationsmedizin Kurortmedizin. 1994; 4/2: 58-60.
Abstract: Beyond principal necessity, quality assurance in physical medicine is indispensible, an the one hand because of the high costs of personnel intensity and an the other because of the fact that quality is the decisive "parameter in competition" with other therapies, especially with drug therapy. All of the typical dimensions of quality, structure, process and result are relevant for physical medicine. Quality assurance, however, is made more difficult because- particularly in the field of medical rehabilitation, always several partners provide results,- as a consequence of empiricism typical physical medicine, the number of standards is insufficient,- the results, i.e. success, can often only be taken from the patient's subjective statement.A particular problem arises from the fact that in most clinical pictures several, often quite different, mechanisms of action can be successful. Therefore, the therapeutic decision is often a subjective one and must frequently be corrected in the course of treatment. As the weak points of physical medicine lie in this direction, they should not be regarded as obstacles but as a challenge to do quality assurance as well as possible. Quality is the decisive argument for the right of existence of any field.
