Leguminosen (Hülsenfrüchtler) - bewährte Kultur- und Arzneipflanzen

Abstract: Leguminous plants - those plants which produce their fruit in the form of pods are divided by botanists into three broad families: mimosa plants (Mimosaceae), carob bean plants (Caesalpiniaceae) and papilionaceous plants (Fabaceae). All three families include species which are important as medicinal and as cultivated plants. The Fabaceae are particularly rich in species, among which many cultivated plants such as peas, beans, lentils, vetches, clover and lupines are to be found. Besides these economically important genera, which are often also used medicinally, this family includes species required predominantly in pharmacy - such as the labumum (Labumum anagyroides), liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis). From amongst the Caesalpiniaceae, Cassia angustifolia (senna leaves and senna fruit) is particularly worthy to be mentioned. The Acacia species of the mimosa family are used in medicine.
