Abstract: A multimodel outpatient treatment programme for chronic low back pain is presented, with physical activity and cooperation of the patients being the primary objectives. The therapeutic aims are less focussed an pain reduction than an pain control, engaging in the patients' responsibility for themselves and an early reintegration in the working process. The programme includes intensive physical activity (reconditioning), education and behavioral support. 81 % of the patients were out of work because of low back pain for an average period of 9.2 months. The first results of 66 patients demonstrate the high effectiveness of the multimodel Programme not only according to a subjective estimation by the patients but also to positive objective changes in somatical, psychological and physical variables as well as in the number of patients who returned to work. 60 % of the patients returned to work after completion of the programme. These results appear to be stable. Preliminary considerations about the prognostic value of different variables are discussed.
