Abstract: In rehabilitation, the quantification of functional disability gains an increasing significance. The majority of assessment methods is confusing so that uniform scalings that are as meaningful as possible are necessary. For this purpose, the "Functional Independence Measure" (FIM) has been introduced in the USA 1987. This FIM is not based an the impairment caused by the disease, but starts out from the degree of functional disability. The independent or non-independent behaviour of the patient is assessed by means of a seven-step scale. In this way, conclusions with regard to the degree of need of care could be drawn. In particular, 13 motor and 5 cognitive items have been assessed. The FIM-Index is a score that has proved its value in practice as well as its versatile applicability as far as the assessment of the results of rehabilitative performance and thus also quality assurance of these are concerned.
