Acupuncture and physiotherapy: an international perspective |
Abstract: Physiotherapists throughout the world are increasingly using acupuncture as a modality of treatment; this is complementary to their other skills and is most often used in conjunction with them. In some countries medical and professional opposition precludes the use of needles but rather than be deterred, physiotherapists are using acupressure, laser, or TNS as an alternative. In some countries there appears to be only one physiotherapist practising but, as enthusiasm for the technique grows, more take up the skill. Interestingly, acupuncture is used more widely by physiotherapists in westernised countries such as Australia, Canada, Sweden and the UK, where they have established Clinical Interest Groups, than in the Far East, where acupuncture originated. The International Acupuncture Association of Physical Therapists was started in 1991 and now has members in nearly 20 countries.Part 1: Is occupational therapy a complementary therapy?
