Long-term improvement of essential hypertension by convalescent care in a rehabilitation unit

Journal/Book: Physikalische Medizin Rehabilitationsmedizin Kurortmedizin. 1994; 4/4: 113-117.

Abstract: After four weeks of intensive convalescent care, 2/3 of patients with initially manifest hypertension had returned to normal values, the others being borderline cases. About 3/4 of the patients with borderline hypertension were normalised by the end of convalescence. Average blood Pressure reduction was 30 mm Hg for systolic, and 15 mm Hg for diastolic values.Thirteen months after the end of convalescent care 25 % of the initially hypertensive patients were still in remission, and more than 50 % only in borderline hypertension. More than 50 % of the patients with borderline hypertension at the beginning of convalescence remain in remission alter thirteen months. Long-term average blood pressure reduction is 20 mmHg for systolic, and 10 mmHg for diastolic pressure. The Part of the manifestly hypertensive patients is long-term reduced for more than 2/3, the Part of patients with long-term normalised blood pressure, is five times higher. These positive effects are brought about by various, nonpharmaceutical strategies of treatment, for which a convalescence provides especially favourable conditions. Prescribing blood pressure reducing drugs can be stopped with 25 % of the medicinally treated patients during or after convalescence.Convalescent care appears to make a positive contribution to the treatment program for this disease and to reduce the treatment costs by permanent reduction of hypertension.
