Photoprotektive Wirkung von ß-Caroten

Abstract: In vitro as well as in animal experiments, ß-carotene reveals photoprotective actions which are mainly due to its properties as a radical scavenger. Special mention must be made of ß-carotene as an inhibitor of photocarcinogenesis. The photoprotective action of ß-carotene can be used in medicine. In the presence of ß-carotene no activation of potentially phototoxic substances such as porphyrins or drugs occurs. The daily doses of ß-carotene which must be administered to ascertain photoprotective activity vary between 50 and 150 mg.
