5th Congress on Phytotherapy in Bonn

Abstract: The main aim of the 5th Congress for Phytotherapy was to present reviews on the phytotherapic approach m gastroenterology, pediatrics and dermatology as well as the results of most recent studies on efficacy and safety of phytomedicines, especially those for the treatment of dermatological diseases, cardio-vascular disturbances as well as psychological and psychosomatic disorders. It could be shown in several studies that the therapeutic action of phytomedicines is equivalent to that of synthetic drugs, while phytomedicines in general demonstrated a lower rate of undesired side effects than synthetic drugs such as aescin and aescin + diethylaminosalicylate -vs- diclofenac-diethyl-ann'ne salt for the treatment of experimental subcutaneous hematoma, standardised Ginkgo-biloba extract -vs- maprotilin, imipramin, tacrine and nimodipin respectively in patients suffering from depression, a combination of Passion flower herb and Valerian root -vs- propaphenin 'm the treatment of psychosomatic diseases, common Ivy extract -vs- ambroxol for chronic bronchitis, a combination of extracts from Poplar bark and leaves, Golden root and common Ash leaves -vs- nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (diclofenac, piroxicam). Also presented during the congress were controlled clinical studies, amongst others: extracts from Melissa officinalis, Hawthorne flowers and leaves, Khella, a combination of Melilote herb extract and rutoside-sulphuric ester, Ginkgo biloba (treatment of impairment of cerebral function and sepsis), herb of St. Johns Wort, Kava-Kava-root, and Chaste fruits. The Rudolf-Fritz-Weiß-Preis 1993 was awarded to H. Göbel and G. Schmidt for investigations on 44 effects of Peppermint- and Eucalyptus oil preparations on experimental headache-mechanisms 'm humans".
