Abstract: The thermal effect of TENS was studied an 25 test persons by measuring skin temperatures using infrared hand pyrometers. In contrast to the control group without TENS effect (n = 10), after 30 min of TENS application an the kneejoint, under the electrodes, the skin temperature rose continuously. The mean rise was 2.3 °C under the cathode and 0.7 °C under the anode.Measurements, 15 and 30 cm below the medial knee-joint cavity and an the first toe, however, did not reveal any statistically significant changes of temperature.Apart from the analgesic effect, a local thermal effect of TENS can be assumed as well, whereas a transmitted peripheral effect cannot be demonstrated.
