Problems of the evaluation of herbal diuretics.

Abstract: Problems which in general arise from the evaluation of herbal diuretics are discussed in this paper. Often the effective constituents of these medicinal plants are unknown. For Horsetail exemplary it is shown, that saponins, which are regarded as effective constituents in the literature, are absent in equiseti herba. Pharmacological and pharmacokinetical data of flavonoids and other phenolics as possible effective constituents are presented and discussed critically. The material published so far does not allow a final evaluation of the drug. Therefore a publication of the material which is available for the Commission E and the implementation of modern clinical studies for the prove of efficacy is strongly demanded.
