Abstract: There are several data and arguments arising from experimental and clinical investigations which support the view of a specific positive effect of balneotherapeutic treatments with iodine-containing mineral waters an different, predominantly degenerative, diseases. We must discriminate: Effects via the thyroid System (Wolff-Chaikoff effect; inercase of basic metabolic rate) and non-endocrinological iodine effects, e.g. via antioxidant and rheological mechanisms. Only some of these effects have been proved so well that they could be regarded as being specific for iodine. Further investigations, above all about the influence of iodine an different antioxidant mechanisms (protection against free radicals and lipid peroxidation) seem to be promising.
