Bewegungsmangel - Taiji ist einen Versuch wert |
Journal/Book: Deutsche Zeitschrift für Akupunktur. 1994; 37/1: 21-24.
Abstract: Lack of exercise, improper breathing habits and decreased body awareness are common problems of modern civilization. They can eventually lead to illness or rather to a lowered resistance to illness. It is often difficult for a physician to convince his patient to change his life style and exercise regularly. Taiji Quan, a Chinese method of combining meditation and movement, stimulates concentration, coordination, balance and body awareness. In this way automatic breathing is improved, especially the function of the diaphragm which, in turn, influences the functions of the heart and lungs as well as the organs in the abdomen. There are no exaggerated movements involved and Taiji can be carried out by all age groups. Of course, Taiji is not the one and only form of exercise. In China, it is considered mainly as a sport and for physical training. In the West, Taiji appeals to intellectuals because of the spiritual aspects it offers over and above the physical movements. Many patients prefer Taiji to other forms of exercise, and thus it fulfils its purpose, i.e. to motivate the patient to regular exercise as a form of prophylaxis.
