The role of the clinical placement in art therapy training: Toward consolidating our professional identity. Second European Conference in Arts Therapies Education: Our professional identity (1992, Sittard, Netherlands) |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1993; 20: 205-212.
Abstract: Identifies specialist demands in providing art therapy training placements for students and questions the essential training criteria that should be upheld and followed. The author reviews history and statistics on clinical placements and highlights core priorities based on his training experience. The move for art therapy from activity- and social care-based influence to psychotherapy-based influence is seen as a positive factor. Registration of clinical training placement centers, consistency of placement supervision, adequate facilities for clinical training, student process and professional performance, and dissemination of clinical learning are also discussed. It is argued that what distinguishes art therapy placements from ventures of singular artistic liberty is the educators' responsibility for accountability in providing therapeutic service.
