Alleviation of performance anxiety through hypnotherapy

Journal/Book: Psychology of Music. 1993; 21: 78-82.

Abstract: Describes a 2-session hypnotherapeutic approach combining success imagery and Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET) designed to reduce musicians' performance anxiety and so alleviate this problem. Three case studies of a 38-yr-old male violinist in a symphony orchestra, a 22-yr-old male music student, and a 27-yr-old male guitarist in a rock band, illustrate how the approach is employed. These cases indicate that one way of reducing musicians' negative thinking is to use success imagery and RET suggestions in a hypnotherapeutic context. This catalyst effect is apparent in all 3 case studies, with musicians reducing their scores on the Performance Anxiety Inventory (J. Nagle et al, 1981) immediately after treatment and continuing to do so over the following 6 mo.
