Abstract: Clarifies the relationship between music therapy (MT) and psychotherapy by emphasizing the characteristics of MT and, at the same time, by pointing to the psychotherapeutic aspects of MT. Problems with clarification of this relationship are discussed prior to an analysis of when MT is indicated and when MT is the "right therapy" for particular disturbances of the psyche. It is argued that determination if it is the right therapy is only possible if one can prove that musical processes are an analogy of the psychological processes leading to recovery from a particular disturbance and that, by working with music, processes take place in the client that lead to recovery. It is further argued that recovery occurs when a situation has been characterized by its closeness to and distance from reality, when a nonmusical action leads to recovery within the musical context, or when musical expressions change.
