Cited quantitative research articles in music education research journals, 1975-1990: A content analysis of selected studies.

Abstract: An identification of studies most often cited in research articles published in the ÇJournal of research in music education>, the ÇBulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education>, ÇPsychology of music>, the ÇJournal of music therapy>, ÇContributions to music education>, and the ÇMissouri journal of research in music education> between 1975-90. Primary dependent variable categories included music preference, student on-task and off-task behavior, perception or performance of tempo, vocal performance, pitch accuracy and intonation, melodic or rhythmic perception, teacher approval or disapproval behavior, student attitudes, and evaluation of teaching or instruction. The most frequent independent variable used across the 26 students included musical stimulus characteristics (e.g., tempo, style), teacher behavior (e.g., approval or disapproval, eye contact), instructional methods, and subject characteristics (e.g., grade level, training and expertise).
